Connect your Magento store to Alia to show popups, offer discount codes, and see the revenue your popups bring in. Alia works with both Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce. Setup takes two parts: your developer installs the Alia module, then you activate it in your Magento admin and sign in to Alia.
Before you start
You will need:
Magento Open Source or Adobe Commerce, version 2.4.4 or later. Self-hosted stores and Adobe Commerce stores hosted by Adobe are both supported. The one exception is Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service, Adobe's newer fully managed version (see the FAQ).
PHP 8.1 or later on your Magento server. Magento 2.4.4 can also run on older PHP versions, which the Alia module doesn't support.
A developer who can install Magento modules. The module installs with Composer, the same way as other Magento extensions.
Admin access to System > Extensions > Integrations in your Magento admin.
Pop-ups allowed for your Magento admin in your browser. Connecting opens a small Alia window, which some browsers block.
Step 1: Install the Alia module
Your developer runs these commands on your Magento server, then deploys the change the way they deploy any other module:
composer require alia/magento2 bin/magento module:enable Alia_Connect bin/magento setup:upgrade bin/magento setup:di:compile # production mode only bin/magento cache:flush
Nothing changes on your storefront yet.
Step 2: Activate and connect your store
In your Magento admin, go to System > Extensions > Integrations.
Find Alia and click Activate.
Review the permissions Alia asks for, then click Allow.
In the window that opens, sign in to Alia. If you don't have an account yet, create one here.
Confirm your store's address, choose which websites to connect, and click Connect.
When the window closes, Alia shows as Active in your Magento admin and your store appears in Alia.
For more on this page of your Magento admin, see Adobe's guide to Integrations. You don't need to create an integration or copy any tokens: the Alia row appears once the module is installed, and Alia handles the rest.
đĄTip: If the Alia window doesn't open, your browser blocked it. Allow pop-ups for your Magento admin and click Activate again. In Chrome, see Google's instructions for allowing pop-ups; other browsers have a similar setting.
Connecting more than one website
If your Magento install runs several websites, each one connects as its own store in Alia, with its own popups, discount codes and reporting. Discount codes only work on the website they were created for.
When you connect, you can choose to create a new Alia store for each website. If you already run Alia on that website with a pasted script, pick that store instead. It keeps its campaigns, signups and history.
To connect more websites later, go to Settings > Embed Alia in Alia and click Connect next to the website. Each website you connect this way becomes a new Alia store.
After you connect
Popups go live once you publish a campaign. The module adds the Alia script to your storefront for you, so there's nothing to paste. Alia's setup guide skips the embed step for Magento stores, and you won't see a Not embedded warning just after connecting.
Keep Magento's cron running. The module sends orders to Alia every minute through Magento's cron. If Alia stops hearing from your store, it shows a Magento orders are delayed banner. Check that cron is running and that the Alia module is up to date. Popups and discount codes keep working.
Popups don't show on checkout pages, including the order confirmation page.
Targeting by page type isn't available on Magento yet. To show a popup only on cart, search, account or home pages, target those pages by URL instead.
To check that popups are showing, publish a campaign and visit your storefront in a private browser window.
Headless and PWA Studio stores
If your storefront isn't built by Magento, install and activate the module the same way. Connecting, discount codes and orders work as usual. Your developer also needs to add Alia's embed script to your storefront by hand, because the module can't add it to pages Magento doesn't build. Copy the snippet from Settings > Embed Alia in Alia, under "For a headless storefront."
On headless stores, orders are matched to popups by discount code, email and phone number only.
Staging sites
A copy of your store on another address, such as a staging site, doesn't show popups until you connect it as its own store. We recommend connecting staging to a separate Alia account.
Removing Alia from Magento
Uninstall the module with Magento's command, not only composer remove. Running composer remove on its own leaves behind an Alia integration that can't be deleted from your Magento admin.
bin/magento module:uninstall --non-composer Alia_Connect composer remove alia/magento2 bin/magento setup:upgrade
FAQ
Which storefront themes work?
Luma, Hyvä and themes built on them get the Alia script automatically. For headless and PWA Studio stores, see above.
My store uses a strict content security policy. Does Alia still work?
Yes. The module adds the addresses Alia needs to your store's content security policy. On stores with a very strict policy, such as Hyvä's CSP mode, custom code targeting and custom code popup elements don't work.
Does Alia work with Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service?
No. Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service is Adobe's fully managed version, which doesn't allow installing modules like Alia's. Adobe Commerce hosted by Adobe (called Adobe Commerce on cloud infrastructure) is supported. If you're not sure which you have, ask your developer or agency.
Alia says my store isn't embedded. What do I do?
Alia only shows this once a campaign is live and no visitor has loaded the Alia script in the last four hours. On a headless or PWA Studio store, it usually means the embed script hasn't been added to your storefront yet. See Headless and PWA Studio stores above. On Luma, Hyvä and themes built on them, check with your developer that the Alia module is still installed and enabled.
Alia shows a "Magento is disconnected" banner. What do I do?
Alia can't reach your Magento store, so discount codes and orders are paused. Your popups keep showing. In your Magento admin, go to System > Extensions > Integrations and click Reauthorize next to Alia.
Is Alia on the Adobe Commerce Marketplace?
Not yet. Install the Alia module with Composer using the steps above.
Do I need a plan?
Yes. Popups don't show on your store until you choose a plan. Alia plans for Magento stores are billed through Stripe. See How Alia pricing and billing work.
