How to Add WhatsApp Collection to Your Popups

Collect WhatsApp opt-ins alongside email and SMS, and send them straight to Klaviyo.

Written by Rob D

You can collect WhatsApp marketing opt-ins through your Alia popups and send those subscribers straight to Klaviyo. Once you add a WhatsApp list, Alia subscribes visitors who submit a phone number to that list with WhatsApp marketing consent.

Before you start

You'll need:

  • An active WhatsApp channel in Klaviyo (paid or trial). WhatsApp collection only works if WhatsApp is active in your Klaviyo account, either on a paid plan or a free trial.

  • WhatsApp enabled for the right countries. WhatsApp needs to be set up in Klaviyo for each country you plan to show the popup in.

  • Klaviyo connected through OAuth. If your Klaviyo card in Alia shows Upgrade to OAuth, your store uses an older connection that doesn't support a WhatsApp list. Click Upgrade to OAuth first. Your email and SMS lists are kept.

  • A phone number field in your popup. Alia only subscribes visitors to WhatsApp when they submit a phone number.

💡 Note: To check whether WhatsApp is set up in your Klaviyo account, open your profile menu in Klaviyo, select Settings, then select WhatsApp. If you're still not sure, check with Klaviyo support before you add a WhatsApp list.

How WhatsApp consent works

There's no separate WhatsApp opt-in in your popup. Once a WhatsApp list is set, every visitor who submits a phone number through a popup that uses that list is subscribed to it with WhatsApp marketing consent. If an SMS list is also set, the same visitor is subscribed with SMS consent too.

This is why your popup copy needs to tell visitors they're opting in to WhatsApp messages. See Update your popup copy for WhatsApp below.

How to add a WhatsApp list

There are two ways to add a WhatsApp list, depending on whether you want it as your default for every popup or only on specific popups.

Option 1: Set it as your default for all popups

  1. In Alia, go to Integrations.

  2. On the Klaviyo card, click Edit to open Configure Klaviyo.

  3. Click Show advanced options.

  4. Under Whatsapp list, search for your WhatsApp list by name or paste its list ID.

  5. Save your changes.

This sets your default WhatsApp list. Every popup that uses your default Klaviyo settings starts sending phone numbers to it, including popups you create later. Popups, forms, and rewards that have their own Klaviyo settings keep using their own lists, so update those separately.

Option 2: Set it on a specific popup

  1. Open the popup in the popup editor.

  2. Go to Integration settings > Klaviyo settings. The subtitle says Using default settings until you change something.

  3. Click Show advanced options, then choose your list under Whatsapp list.

  4. Save and publish the popup.

Repeat these steps for each popup you want to collect WhatsApp opt-ins on. You can also set lists for a single form, under Klaviyo settings on that form, or for a reward, under Integration overrides > Klaviyo settings in the reward editor.

💡 Note: Don't set a WhatsApp list unless Klaviyo has specifically enabled WhatsApp for your account. Your WhatsApp list can be the same list you use for SMS, and Alia subscribes the visitor once with consent for each channel. Confirm with Klaviyo support that this setup fits how you want to manage consent.

Update your popup copy for WhatsApp

Because the phone number step now collects WhatsApp consent as well as SMS consent, update the copy on that step so visitors know they're signing up for WhatsApp messages, not just texts.

Compliance messaging

Speak with your Klaviyo CSM or your legal team about the compliance text you need for WhatsApp, and confirm you're ready to collect WhatsApp numbers for marketing before you go live.

Test your setup

After you add the list, submit your popup with a fresh test phone number. In Klaviyo, check that the profile lands in your WhatsApp list with WhatsApp marketing consent.
