Before you start
Connect your Alia account to Klaviyo. To set this up, see Integrating Alia with Klaviyo.
Create the segment you want to target in your Klaviyo account.
How to add a Klaviyo segment targeting rule
In Alia, go to Campaigns.
On the campaign card, select Targeting to open the Edit targeting modal.
Select a filter, then select In Klaviyo segment from the Klaviyo group.
In Select or search for a segment, select the segment you want to target. If your segment isn't shown, enter its name or paste its segment ID.
Select Default to in segment or Default to not in segment.
Select Save.
If the campaign isn't live yet, turn on its toggle on the campaign card.
To show the popup only to visitors who aren't in the segment, select Not in Klaviyo segment in step 3 instead. To target a Klaviyo list, see How to target popups by Klaviyo lists.
How Alia checks segment membership
Alia asks Klaviyo which segments a visitor is in each time they land on your store. Klaviyo decides who's in a segment, so a new subscriber counts as soon as Klaviyo adds them to it.
Klaviyo can only check membership for visitors it has already identified in that browser. A visitor is identified after they do one of the following:
Select a link in a Klaviyo email.
Submit a Klaviyo form.
Sign up through an Alia popup while Klaviyo's tracking script (klaviyo.js) is installed on your store.
For visitors Klaviyo hasn't identified, your default setting decides whether they see the popup.
đĄNote: Because Klaviyo can't identify every visitor, a segment targeting rule can't guarantee that only people in your segment see the popup. Pick the default setting that fits most of your traffic.
How to choose a default setting
Default to not in segment: Alia treats visitors Klaviyo hasn't identified as not in the segment. This is the default.
Default to in segment: Alia treats visitors Klaviyo hasn't identified as in the segment.
How this plays out depends on the condition you chose:
With In Klaviyo segment and Default to not in segment, only identified visitors in the segment see the popup.
With Not in Klaviyo segment and Default to not in segment, new visitors see the popup, and identified visitors in the segment don't. Use this to hide a popup from a segment like current subscribers.
How to combine a Klaviyo segment rule with other targeting rules
In the Edit targeting modal, choose how Alia combines your targeting rules.
AND: the visitor must match every rule to see the popup.
OR: the visitor needs to match only one rule.
For example, to show a popup only to visitors in your VIP segment who are browsing on mobile, add both rules and select AND.
Frequently asked questions
My Klaviyo segment isn't showing in the segment picker. What should I do?
The segment picker shows your 20 most recently updated Klaviyo segments. To find an older segment, enter its name or paste its segment ID. You don't need to reconnect your Klaviyo integration.
Where do I find a Klaviyo segment ID?
In Klaviyo, go to Lists & Segments and open the segment. The segment ID is the 6-character code in the page's web address.
Why are some people in my segment not seeing the popup?
Klaviyo can only confirm segment membership for visitors it has identified in that browser, for example after they select a link in a Klaviyo email. For everyone else, your default setting decides. See How Alia checks segment membership in this article.
Someone just joined my segment. How long until the targeting rule applies to them?
As soon as Klaviyo adds them to the segment, the rule applies on their next page load, as long as Klaviyo has identified them in that browser. How quickly Klaviyo updates a segment depends on Klaviyo.
Do I need a segment to hide popups from existing subscribers?
Usually not. New campaigns use the New visitors targeting rule by default. It already hides popups from visitors Klaviyo has identified, people who signed up through Alia, and visitors arriving from email or SMS links. Add a Not in Klaviyo segment rule if you want to exclude a specific segment as well.
The targeting modal shows a consent warning. What does it mean?
If Require consent to track visitors is turned on, Alia can't check Klaviyo segments for visitors who haven't consented yet. For those visitors, the segment condition won't match.
Still stuck?
See Troubleshooting your Klaviyo integration, or contact Alia support. Include the campaign name, the Klaviyo segment name, and what the visitor saw instead. Live support is available Monday through Friday, 8am to 6pm ET.
